If you have been in business for any length of time, you know it is becoming increasingly more difficult to reach customers because there are so many different channels. The Wooster Area Chamber of Commerce is offering a program as part of its Educational Series to help businesses get a better understanding of whether their websites are helping or hurting their businesses. I am happy to say I will be giving the presentation from 8-9:30 a.m. May 10 (a Thursday) at the Wooster Chamber offices in the Schaeffler Conference Room. There is limited seating, so make sure to register by clicking here.

What will you learn?

Here is a rundown of my Wooster Chamber presentation:

  • Why the letters SEO matter when it comes to your website
  • Does your website utilize Google Analytics and do you understand the reports?
  • Do you have fresh content?
  • Where do visitors land on your website?
  • How do visitors move through your website?
  • Why you don’t necessarily want to bounce high

What is SEO?

The letters stand for search engine optimization. SEO is a series of strategies for websites to make them rank higher in search engine results page rankings (SERPs). SEO is a long-term solution, not an overnight fix. You can always get on Google’s by paying the company. This is Search Engine Marketing (SEM).

At Wooster Media Group, I focus on SEO. It deals with what is called organic search, or you might think of it as free search. SEM focuses on paid search. Both have their place in your overall marketing scheme, but advertising/SEM is here today, gone tomorrow. SEO is building to last.

I will go over some of the top-level items of SEO and what I look for when I conduct SEO audits on business websites.

Does your website take advantage of Google Analytics?

Most websites do, and this is not usually a problem. However, if you are not, then you need to do so today.

Google Analytics uses a snippet of Java script coding to track how users move through your website. So, Google Analytics will factor into a number of points in the presentation.

GA allows for a wide-range of reporting. These reports will reveal a lot of things about your website, how it is used, and what the page flow is. You can see on what pages your users land, and the pages from which they exit. Understanding where your visitors exit becomes important if you are trying to convert visits into sales. The exit pages can provide valuable insights.

The analytics will also show you your bounce rate. Under normal circumstances, the higher the number the better it is. However, that is not the case with the bounce rate. You want it low, low, low. The rate tells you what percentage of website visitors leave after only viewing one page. So, you can see why you done want to bounce too high.

How much does it cost to attend?

The presentation is free to members of the Wooster Chamber.
